TN Duroc piglets are strong and active immediately after birth, primarily due to their high birth weights. This strength allows them to quickly reach the udder and consume an adequate amount of colostrum. This capability is a result of their Early Phase Vitality, a unique characteristic that is an essential component of Topigs Norsvin’s breeding program.
All newborn piglets must ingest 250 ml of colostrum shortly after birth. This intake is required as soon as possible because maternal antibodies from colostrum can only be absorbed by piglets for a few hours after birth. The additional energy boost provided by colostrum kickstarts development. Therefore, it is vital that piglets consume colostrum, preferably from their own mother, in a timely manner.

Beyond the farrowing pens and nursery, the natural robustness and higher health of the TN Duroc piglets result in fewer health problems and lower mortality, which can mitigate operational costs associated with medication, loss, stunted growth, and poor feed efficiency.
