TN Duroc

Robust Birth Weights

The Early Phase Vitality of TN Duroc is evident from birth, as the piglets are heavier, stronger, and more active. This ultimately leads to greater uniformity, continuous growth, and a reduced workload – providing a significant advantage.

The Advantages of Higher Birth Weight in TN Duroc Offspring

Since the early 2000s, Topigs Norsvin has implemented a practice of weighing newborn piglets. This has played a crucial role in their breeding program, which emphasizes piglet vitality and quality. As a result, TN Duroc offspring consistently have higher birth weights compared to other Duroc lines, establishing a strong foundation for their Early Phase Vitality.

In addition to their higher birth weights, TN Duroc piglets have more developed organs and greater energy supply, further contributing to a strong start.

Heavier Piglets Mean a Stronger Start

Results from a trial conducted on pig farms in the United States revealed that newborn TN Duroc offspring weigh 0.03 to 0.07 kgs more than those from other Duroc lines.
Higher birth weights have a positive impact on performance: TN Duroc piglets grow faster and are generally stronger, leading to fewer health issues. When health problems do arise, recovery tends to be quicker, resulting in less effort and fewer inputs.
These benefits extend beyond the early phase. By the time they are weaned, the heavier piglets are healthier and stronger, resulting in a smoother transition into the nursery and finisher phases, with fewer health challenges.

A Self-Reinforcing Mechanism

Thanks to their strong start, TN Duroc pigs consume feed more efficiently and are less susceptible to disruptions, leading to fewer health complications. Each uninterrupted production phase allows them to perform better in subsequent phases.

Early Phase Vitality initiates a self-reinforcing mechanism that promotes steady growth and development, enhances uniformity, and ultimately improves carcass quality. Another benefit is the reduced labour input required.

Summary

In summary, the higher birthweight of TN Duroc offspring is a key element of their Early Phase Vitality. The result is a quick, problem-free start, efficient production, better litter uniformity, uninterrupted growth, and improved quality. An added bonus is the reduced labour required during the farrowing, nursery, and finishing phases.
